How dogs are used in research - EARA feature

Dogs used in biomedical research and their caretaker

EARA has updated its feature article about the use of dogs in biomedical research with recent case studies and video.

The latest EU animal use annual statistics (2022) show that 8,709 dogs were used – dogs are only used in studies when there is either no effective non-animal method available or when other species of animal will not provide meaningful results.

As a result, they are essential for testing the potential toxicity of new drugs before they reach clinical trials, including the example of a new cancer therapy.

The article goes on to look at dog studies for basic research and for medical treatments for dogs themselves, as well as what is being done to reduce or replace their use.
